T he official start of In2Risk 2022 kicks off Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, at 1:00pm with Erica Dhawan, who promises attendees will take away lessons in leadership that they can apply to all facets of their lives. Specifically, Dhawan, who describes herself as a 21st century collaboration expert in addition to being an author and entrepreneur, will teach attendees how to create a culture of connection. “The audience will learn how to inspire anyone, anytime, anywhere, and connect in ways that will en- able them to get big things done,” says Dhawan. “It’s done by creating a culture of ‘maniacal clarity,’ by which I mean giving people not only the details of a project, but also inspiring them to take action and create a level of optimism in them, something that is especially impor- tant in a hybrid world.” Dhawan says the path to get there is by increasing one’s con- nectional intelligence, which she will Erica Dhawan, award-winning speaker and author, will kick us off on Thursday, Nov. 10, with all things connectional intelligence, including how to accelerate in- novation and build trust in a hybrid workforce. Friday morning’s open- ing panel, “Future of Risk: Priorities and Predictions,” will discuss how to navigate through the now while preparing us for what comes next. Finally, don’t miss Anthony Trucks, former NFL athlete and American Ninja Warrior, as he shares how to “Make Shift Happen” and unlock our potential for success. K Expand Your Network at In2Risk 2022 Norman-Walton6 Conference Preview D id you know that San Francisco played a pivotal role in the insurance indus- try? The Great 1906 San Francisco earthquake and ensuing fire caused significant destruction. A Lloyd’s of London underwriter’s decision to “pay all of our policyholders in full, irrespective of the terms of their policies,” solidified the markets’ reputation and position. The aftermath of the disaster laid the founda- tion for many of the risk-modeling prac- tices that you hear about today. The Golden Gate CPCU Chapter hopes you enjoy the conference as much as this bit of history. If you have some downtime in the coming days and are looking for something to do, here is a list of our suggestions: 1 Hike in Lands End and take in the beautiful vista of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Fran- cisco Bay—you can even walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Be warned that San Francisco can be very foggy—so much so that we even named the fog Karl! 2 Explore one of San Francisco’s mu- seums. Our favorites are the Legion of Honor, California Academy of Sciences, and Asian Art Museum. 3 Try a San Francisco burrito in the Mission District at La Taque- ria or El Farolito. If you cannot make it to the Mission District but want to try something dif- ferent, consider Tacorea for Korean fusion burritos. 4 Stroll down the Embarcadero, where you will pass shopping and snacks at the Ferry Building, sea lions at Pier 39, and of course the very popular seafood destination called Fisherman’s Wharf. 5 Ride San Francisco’s cable car system through the city’s hills, starting in the Embarcadero and ending at Van Ness Street. Be sure to eat at the House of Prime Rib when you are done (reserva- tions highly recommended). The Golden Gate CPCU Chapter will have a booth at the conference, so swing by if you want additional recommendations. Alternatively, email us at GoldenGateChapter@cpcusociety.org if you have any questions or are local and want more information about the chapter. K Welcome to San Francisco! Brown will be a presenter for Thursday’s session, “Artificial Intel- ligence and Machine Learning in P&C Underwriting and Claims.” The session aims to show attendees how AI and ML can deliver better carrier and cus- tomer opportunities and experiences, according to Ramya Sunad, USAA, who will join Brown on the panel. As far as the carriers that are out front when it comes to adopt- ing AI and ML, Brown says, “We certainly have the insurtechs like Hippo Insurance—they are defi- nitely embracing the process.” She adds that traditional carriers are showing interest as they move away from their legacy systems and start fresh with new sys- tems that have AI and ML capabilities. “They are using vendors to help work toward that,” she says, “but it’s a big move.” Adds Sunad, “Some carriers are further along than others. With P&C insurance entering hard mar- kets, all aspects of the industry are interested in simplifying processes, cutting expenses, and reaching cost effectiveness by using the latest technology to help make impactful financial decisions.” Brown also notes that personal lines carriers are adopting these technologies faster than commer- cial lines because implementation is generally easier for personal lines. “It’s a very streamlined pro- cess for, say, personal auto. A fam- ily with one, two, or three vehicles is a much easier process than com- mercial lines that may have a fleet of 100 or 200 vehicles.” The presentation will address implementation of AI and ML tools in both underwrit- ing and claims, and Sunad says there are efficiencies to be realized on both ends. “It frees up underwriting to do the critical think- ing as opposed to performing tasks,” she explains. “Un- derwriters can move away from data gathering and toward analyzing port- folios, making effective underwriting recommendations and setting carri- er appetites that are rated optimally. The same applies to claims, plus the adjuster is freed up to provide the emotional support that is necessary during the process.” While there may be some con- cern about AI and ML replacing hu- man employees, Brown says, “I think there’s going to be a place for most, if not everyone.” She adds that, while there may be “some thinning where thinning needs to happen,” she notes that, for the most part, “I think we’re augmenting everyone’s roles with these great tools.” For more information on the im- pact of AI and ML on underwriting and claims, head to Continental Ballroom 5 on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 4:00pm. The session, “Future of Risk: Priorities and Predictions,” includes panelists Pete Miller, president and CEO at The Institutes; Laura Day, national chair of Young Risk Profes- sionals and senior vice president at Marsh; Bill Keogh, COO and operat- ing partner at Eos Venture Partners; Aimee Kilpatrick, executive vice presi- dent and COO at Cadence Insurance; and Thomas Troy, president and CEO at CSAA Insurance Group. Together, they hope attendees gain a variety of perspectives on issues facing the in- surance industry, including the model for insurance going forward. “We will discuss how our industry is transitioning from a risk financing business to a risk identification and pre-loss mitiga- tion business,” says Miller. “We will always have claims, but between data, artificial intelligence, and other technologies, we can get real-time monitoring and make people’s lives better and safer. I think the industry has a real opportunity to add more value by helping preempt losses from occurring in the first place.” While acknowledging that not ev- ery crystal ball comes with absolute clarity, Miller says attendees will be better equipped and more informed to deal with some of the changes al- ready taking place. “It’s going to give attendees a view into the possible future of the industry, and I think it will be valuable for those at the meeting who are getting their CPCUs, since it will help set themselves up as leaders who understand where the industry is going,” he says. Besides technology, strategies for leveraging data and the block- chain will also be topics of discussion. To learn more, head to the Grand Ballroom at 9:45am on Friday.
