Did You Know?Greetings, Fellow CPCU Society Members: It’s hard to believe we are closing in on yet another year. It has been my privilege to serve as your 2022 president and chair of the CPCU Society Leadership Council, and I cannot thank you enough for your support. When I think back on all we achieved together, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and pride. From my many chapter visits to the quarterly town halls, In2Risk®, and so much more, you’ve heard me talk about one word: growth. And in many different ways, we’ve accomplished just that: •Student opportunities and membership base—In April, we welcomed over 2,000 Gamma Iota Sigma college students into our community. And this past summer, your Leadership Council approved a recommendation for all college students to join the CPCU Society at no cost, regardless of their major or risk management affiliation. •Value proposition and reach—There is now a place for all risk management and insurance professionals who want to grow, learn, and connect with us. With the launch of the Pathways member category, we created a way to support each of these learner’s unique journey—and introduced Facilitated Study Groups for core CPCU® courses as an added benefit. •International presence—Earlier this year, a volunteer task force paved the way to better engage professionals around the world as we continue to expand globally. Look for information soon on a new virtual international chapter. •Employer support—With newly available access to multiple toolkits, letter templates, and eight executive leader endorsements, you’ll be more prepared than ever to gain corporate support for your membership and professional development. But our work is not done. While we’ve set the foundation, it’s now up to each of us to build the structure. Keep sharing your stories and bringing other motivated and diverse individuals into our vibrant community—in addition to renewing your own membership for 2023. There’s still so much more we can achieve together, and I’m excited to see what our new slate of leaders will accomplish in the months ahead. Speaking of our leaders, I would like to acknowledge our over 1,000 volunteer leaders who keep the CPCU Society running by generously lending their time and talent. Thank you for your unwavering support. And of course, I must also extend a sincere thank you to every one of our members. We are here for you and because of you. Now, I’m pleased to introduce the final 2022 edition of Insights—which would not have been possible without our impressive lineup of authors. Within the following pages, you’ll find articles on forever chemicals, aerial imagery, insurance fraud, and much more. All my best for a happy, healthy holiday season and prosperous new year, Sincerely, Chris Hampshire, CPCU, CIC, ARM President and Chair, CPCU Society Leadership Council Letter From the President INSIGHTS | Winter 2022 | 3 Contributors Want to see your company’s ad in Insights? Forever Chemicals: By Julie Sealey What the Insurance Industry Needs to Know 6 | INSIGHTS | Winter 2022PFAS chemicals (or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are an emerging issue in the insurance industry, with increasing litigation and recent regulation and scientific studies indicating that they may be more concerning than originally thought. This article reviews the history, health concerns, and regulation of PFAS chemicals and discusses ways to apply risk management methods to prevent large PFAS losses to insurers, agents and brokers, and individual businesses. In the last 30 years, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)— known as “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down, but persist indefinitely in the environment— have raised significant concerns for the population. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), questions have arisen around possible links to cancer, birth defects, kidney disease, and a variety of other human health problems. 1 Because of their ability to migrate in water, PFAS can be found in soil, concrete, groundwater, surface water, and sediments. They’ve been detected in blood samples of wildlife and humans globally, including the North and South Poles. And they accumulate over time. Currently, insufficient toxicological data exists for the full array of PFAS chemicals, so they remain an emerging issue for the insurance industry. However, PFAS chemicals all have similar structures—which suggests that they also have similar health end points. And because proof of harm from some of these chemicals has been litigated, further studies on the full cluster are surely, and sorely, needed. Underwriting, claims, loss control, legal, and other commercial insurer departments need to be aware of PFAS exposures and address them accordingly, while agents and brokers need to be well-informed about the exposures that their clients may have— or may have had in the past—to avoid large losses that could adversely affect their books of business. Individuals, too, need to know about the exposures. INSIGHTS | Winter 2022 | 7 Next >
